The Contribution of Social Work to Protecting the Rights of Vulnerable Groups in Sudan: Opportunities and Challenges

Abstract

This study examines the contribution of social work to promoting and protecting human rights in Sudan, particularly the rights of vulnerable groups such as children, women, and persons with disabilities, amid the complex humanitarian conditions caused by armed conflict, large‑scale displacement, economic deterioration, and the widespread prevalence of gender‑based violence. The study draws on a theoretical framework and field‑based analysis and presents three Sudanese case studies that illustrate how social workers employ their professional skills and intervention mechanisms in the areas of protection, assistance, and empowerment to safeguard the fundamental rights of these groups

The study also discusses the major challenges facing professional social work practice in the current Sudanese context, including limited resources, restricted access to essential services, and the deepening of social vulnerability. It concludes by offering a set of practical solutions and recommendations that can strengthen the role of social work in advancing social justice and building a more effective and inclusive protection system that upholds human dignity and human rights in Sudan.
