Transforming eLearning in Africa: The Role of AI in Fostering Digital Literacy and Critical Thinking

Abstract
This paper investigates the transformative potential of e-learning platforms, empowered by Artificial Intelligence, in shaping Africa's educational landscape. In an era of digital expansion, these platforms hold the promise to profoundly transform education by enhancing its accessibility, fostering digital literacy, and cultivating critical thinking skills. Specifically, this discourse delineates the role of e-learning in Africa, emphasizing its capacity to surmount educational impediments while illustrating the proliferation of digital platforms tailored to local exigencies. Furthermore, it underscores the importance of digital literacy and critical thinking as vital skills for surviving and thriving in the 21st century, particularly within the African context. Building on this, the paper explores how AI is redefining these educational imperatives, offering a glimpse into a future where personalized learning, adaptive systems, and data analytics synergize to enhance digital literacy and critical thinking. To investigate this, the study employs a qualitative analytical review and secondary data synthesis to evaluate the integration of Artificial Intelligence in African e-learning systems. Through a comparative case study analysis of regional implementations—specifically in Morocco and Kenya—the research critically examines the 'paradox of innovation,' identifying the systemic gap between data-intensive AI algorithms and the infrastructural realities of resource-constrained environments. Finally, the paper concludes with a discussion on upcoming challenges and potential pathways, leveraging AI to further improve e-learning, digital literacy, and critical thinking within the African education sphere.
